At the initial showings of The Wizard of Oz, some members of the audience got up and walked out because they didn’t understand the movie. In the press, the movie was compared unfavorably to Gone with the Wind, the other big movie released that season. Although it made Judy Garland a star, it was not a big hit and lost about a million dollars. It wasn’t until television and reruns that the film became a classic.
